Osun 2026: Crisis in PDP worsens as Governor Adeleke Resigns Ahead of Osun Governorship Primary

Less than 24 hours before the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was expected to conduct its governorship primary in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced his resignation from the party, deepening tensions already rocking the PDP at the national level.

The move comes amid a widening factional crisis within the party. Earlier on Monday, Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi stated that the primary would not hold as planned due to internal divisions and hinted that the governor had lost interest in pursuing the party’s ticket. But conflicting information later emerged after a letter from the PDP national secretariat insisted the primary would proceed at the Atlantic Multipurpose Hall in the state capital.

Adeleke’s resignation letter, dated November 4, 2025 but surfacing Monday evening, was addressed to the Sagba Ward 2 chairman in Ede. In the letter, the governor attributed his withdrawal to the “current crisis of the national leadership” of the PDP, saying the situation made continued membership untenable.

He expressed appreciation to the PDP for providing the platform that enabled his election as senator representing Osun West and, later, as governor of the state. However, he emphasized that the ongoing leadership conflict had eroded the stability required for him to remain in the party.

The development has thrown the PDP’s Osun primary into uncertainty and has triggered widespread speculation about Adeleke’s next political steps. Analysts say his exit from the party ahead of the 2026 governorship election could reshape political alignments in the state and potentially trigger realignments among party stakeholders.

What Comes Next?
With the PDP’s internal divisions widening and its governorship primary in disarray, all eyes are now on Governor Adeleke as political actors await his next move. His future party choice — or whether he chooses an alternative political strategy — will significantly influence Osun’s 2026 election landscape.
