Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso expected to join ADC on Monday

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is reportedly on the verge of joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Multiple sources familiar with the development say the decision did not happen overnight. It is understood to be the result of weeks of quiet consultations and strategic planning within Kwankwaso’s inner circle and ADC leadership including former Vice president, Atiku Abubakar.  If everything goes as planned, he is expected to formally register with the party on Monday at his residence in Kano.

What makes this development particularly significant is the expected ripple effect. Kwankwaso is not just an individual political figure; he leads a strong and loyal grassroots base known as the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Kano State and Jigawa state. Indications are that members of the movement across the country have been asked to begin aligning with the ADC at their respective ward and state levels.

For political observers, this suggests something more coordinated than a routine defection. It points to a broader realignment that could influence opposition politics in the months ahead.

Kwankwaso has remained a prominent voice in northern politics over the years, with a structure that extends beyond Kano State. Any shift involving his base is likely to attract attention, particularly at a time when political actors are beginning to position themselves ahead of the next election cycle.

Although there has been no formal public statement directly from him yet, those close to the movement say the decision is being presented as one guided by the need to strengthen democratic participation, improve governance, and contribute to national development.
