FLASH: Nigeria’s Security Tensions Keep Tinubu Home as Shettima Leads Delegation to G20 Summit

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on Friday departed Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, where he is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November 22–23.

His trip follows President Tinubu’s decision to stay back in Nigeria to closely monitor the nation’s security environment after recent incidents in Kebbi and Kwara States. The president, who had initially been expected to attend the summit, opted to postpone his travel to receive continuous security updates.

This year’s summit is hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the current G20 chair. The gathering, holding at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, will bring together leaders of major global economies, the European Union, the African Union, and top international financial institutions for discussions on economic stability, global cooperation, and security challenges.

Vice President Shettima is expected to conclude his engagements at the summit and return to Nigeria thereafter, where he will brief President Tinubu on the key deliberations and outcomes.
