2027 Polls: Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Dumps NNPP Amid Deep Party Crisis, Defects with Lawmakers and Council Chairmen

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially withdrawn his membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal disputes and the overriding need to protect the collective interest of the people of Kano State.

The development was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, the Governor formally communicated his decision through a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area. The resignation takes effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.

In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity and support he received during his political association with the NNPP.

“I write to respectfully inform the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the Governor stated. “I remain deeply grateful to the party, its leaders, and members across Kano State for the platform and cooperation extended to me since 2022.”

The Governor explained that his decision followed extensive consultations and personal reflection, stressing that it was not borne out of animosity but guided by the broader interest of governance and stability in the state.

“Having carefully reviewed the current situation within the party, and without questioning its ability to resolve its challenges, I have concluded that stepping aside is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he said.

Governor Yusuf further emphasized that the resignation was made in good faith and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and development.

“This decision is taken without bitterness or ill feelings, and with an unwavering commitment to the progress and cohesion of Kano State,” the letter added.

In a major political shake-up, the Governor’s exit from the NNPP is reportedly accompanied by the resignation of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 Local Government Chairmen in the state.

The resignation letter was acknowledged by the Secretary of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who praised the Governor’s performance in office, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare delivery, education, and economic empowerment.

While acknowledging the party’s internal challenges, Zubairu described Governor Yusuf as one of the NNPP’s most impactful leaders.
