The All Progressives Congress (APC) has come out strong in the just-concluded Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, winning five of the six chairmanship seats across Abuja’s councils.
Results released at the various collation centres show the party clearing Bwari, AMAC, Kuje, Kwali and Abaji, leaving only Gwagwalada for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In Bwari Area Council, Hon. Joshua Ishaku was returned elected on the APC platform. AMAC also went the same way, with Hon. Chris Garki emerging chairman-elect.
Gwagwalada stood out as the exception. There, PDP candidate Hon. Kasim Mohammed secured victory, denying the APC a clean sweep.
The APC, however, tightened its hold elsewhere. Hon. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo won in Kuje, Hon. Nuhu Daniel Kwali took Kwali, and Hon. Abdullahi Umar Abubakar was declared winner in Abaji.
The outcome gives the APC control of five of the six area councils in the nation’s capital — a result party supporters describe as a strong statement at the grassroots level. For the PDP, the Gwagwalada win offers a lone bright spot in an otherwise tough outing.
With the dust settling, attention now shifts to how the incoming chairmen will tackle local issues ranging from infrastructure to primary healthcare and sanitation across the FCT.
