Just In: INEC Reschedules 2027 Presidential Election to January 16 – Full Breakdown of New Dates

Nigeria’s election timetable has been officially adjusted as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced fresh dates for the 2027 general elections.

The commission confirmed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027, instead of the previously scheduled February 20, 2027.

The announcement was made in Abuja by Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

Governorship and State Assembly Elections Also Moved

INEC also revised the date for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections. Initially fixed for March 6, 2027, the elections will now hold on Saturday, February 6, 2027.

While the commission did not provide detailed explanations for the adjustment, it stated that the decision was taken to ensure a smoother and better-coordinated electoral process nationwide.

Alignment With Electoral Law

The earlier schedule was structured in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, which regulates the conduct and timing of elections in Nigeria. INEC maintained that the revised dates remain within constitutional and legal requirements.

Assurance to Nigerians

The commission reassured political parties, civil society groups, stakeholders, and voters that preparations for the 2027 elections are ongoing. It reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, transparent, and credible polls.

Nigerians have been urged to take note of the updated election dates and actively participate in the democratic process. Further information regarding logistics, polling arrangements, and voter guidelines is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

The revised timetable signals an important development in Nigeria’s political landscape as preparations gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
