Okonkwo, who was born on September 9, 2001, in Camden, London, to Nigerian (Igbo) parents, stands between 1.98m and 1.99m tall. He began his football journey at Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight.
During his youth career, he represented England across multiple age groups from U-15 through U-18 between 2015 and 2019. However, having never earned a senior cap for England, he remained eligible to make the switch in line with FIFA regulations.
Now Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper in the EFL Championship after completing a permanent transfer from Arsenal, Okonkwo has delivered a string of impressive performances this season. His consistency and crucial saves have played a significant role in the club’s competitiveness in England’s second division.
His standout form has positioned him as a strong candidate to strengthen Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.
The process leading to his switch included talks with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup held in London last year.
Despite the progress, procedural delays prevented his inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
With his eligibility now confirmed, Okonkwo boosts the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping ranks, joining established options such as Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye.
