Security operatives in Ondo State have successfully disrupted a suspected bomb attack in Akure, leading to the arrest of six individuals allegedly linked to the plot.
The State Commissioner of Police, Adebwale Lawal, revealed the development during a press briefing on Thursday. He explained that the operation was initiated following actionable intelligence pointing to the activities of a criminal network operating both within Ondo State and across other regions.
According to Lawal, officers moved swiftly after receiving the tip-off, raiding the suspects’ hideout and apprehending them before they could execute their plan. He described the intervention as a critical breakthrough that prevented what could have resulted in heavy casualties and widespread destruction.
Items recovered from the scene include 217 bottles, a sack of sugar, several charms, 17 mobile phones, ₦187,000 in cash, two laptops, slings, a knife, an external hard drive, identity cards, and two motorcycles.
Preliminary findings, the police chief noted, suggest that some of these materials were intended for the construction of improvised explosive devices, while others were used to facilitate communication and coordination among the suspects.
He emphasized that the timely action of the police averted a potentially devastating incident, adding that documents outlining possible targets were also discovered during the operation.
Further investigations revealed that the suspects had rented an apartment in the Oke-Odu area of Akure, which served as their operational base. Authorities believe their activities may not have been limited to the state capital alone.
Lawal urged landlords and property managers to carry out proper background checks on prospective tenants to enhance security. He reassured residents that the police command remains vigilant and committed to protecting lives and property as investigations continue.
