President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately ask the court to cancel the order that froze Osun State Government accounts and to stop all related actions.
President Tinubu said he felt deeply embarrassed by the timing of the EFCC’s move, not by the agency doing its job under a valid court order. He explained that people often blame him for every action taken by federal agencies, even when he had no prior knowledge of it.
The President repeated his long-standing view that anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies must work independently, professionally, and free from political interference. He stressed that he has never directed or interfered in the day-to-day operations of the EFCC or any other investigative body.
However, Tinubu described the timing as poor because Osun State is only a few days away from its gubernatorial election. He warned that nothing should create the impression that the EFCC or any other federal agency is being used to influence the poll.
The directive aims to remove any suggestion of political interference while allowing the EFCC to continue its anti-corruption work without appearing to affect the upcoming Osun election.
